About Children's Day in Korea

May 5, 2025 is the 103rd Children's Day in South Korea. Children's Day is a legal holiday established to encourage children, who are the leaders of the future, to grow up bright and healthy, and to raise the people's love for children.

Origin and Meaning of Children's Day

Children's Day began on May 1, 1923, led by children's writer Bang Jung-hwan, who first used the honorific title "children." At that time, 'children' meant that they should be respected as independent human beings, not as property of adults. It was started as part of a movement to raise national consciousness and instill hope in children in the difficult times of the Japanese colonial period.

After the liberation of Korea in 1945, the date was changed to May 5, and since 1975, it has been a national holiday. The main meanings of Children's Day are as follows:

  • Respect for Children's Personhood: We respect children as independent individuals and advocate for their rights.
  • Promoting children's happiness: We want to create a social environment where children can grow up happy and healthy.
  • The protagonists of the future society: We encourage and support children to grow up upright and wise.
  • Calling for national attention: Make the whole nation aware of the importance of children and give them love and attention.
